Social Skills Groups: Kindergarten – Adulthood
Difficulties with social communication can significantly impact an individual’s life, leading to challenges such as social isolation, poor reading comprehension, school dropout, lower employment rates, and depression. At Spectrum, we focus on providing clients with the necessary tools to thrive as successful, fulfilled members of their community, engaging in social activities and building lasting relationships.
A Fun, Engaging Approach to Social Skill Development
At Spectrum, we combine social skills training with recreation activities to promote skill acquisition, fluency, and generalization of the skills learned. These activities help clients access the social environments they may find difficult due to misunderstandings of the social nuances of group interactions. Social interaction should be enjoyable to be motivating, which is why we believe fun must be central to all learning activities.

Unique Instructional Strategies for Success
Our social skills groups use Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to guide our approach. Both strategies emphasize logical goal-setting and structured action plans, ensuring clients work towards mastering the skills they need to be successful. All students set personal goals based on their individual social experiences and needs and work towards mastering those goals in a supportive environment.
Serving All Ages
Spectrum primarily serves students ages 6 through adulthood, offering specialized groups for young adults who are focused on building social living skills to increase their independence. For students not yet ready for group activities due to age, skill level, or significant behavioral challenges, we offer individualized coaching (1:1) or small group opportunities (dyads/triads) for personalized support.
Curriculum Tailored to Students’ Needs
Each social skills group’s curriculum is carefully selected to match the learning objectives of the group, with activities designed to engage and challenge the clients. Our instructional strategies involve direct instruction, followed by activity-based reinforcement and practice. Recreational therapy plays a crucial role in teaching group games that not only entertain but also provide an opportunity for clients to practice their social skills in meaningful contexts. Understanding how social skills can “break” or “make” a game allows students to see the real-world application of these skills.

Small Group Environment for Optimal Learning
Spectrum’s social groups are intentionally kept small, with an average of 6 students per class (some groups may have more or fewer, depending on participant needs). Each group is always led by at least 2 staff members to ensure personalized support and attention. Our group experiences are designed for individuals looking to improve their social skills in various settings, including home, community, work, and school.
Types of Groups Offered
- Instructional/Therapeutic Groups: One-hour, on-site programs focused on instructional and therapeutic interventions for skill development and progress in areas of need.
Applicants are matched to the group(s) we believe will best support their goals based on the information they provide.

Group Session Timing
Spectrum group sessions generally align with the public school calendar, as this is the most convenient option for the majority of our clients. Applications may be submitted at any time and will be reviewed as soon as possible after receipt. Applicants can typically expect to receive a response within one week of submitting their application. New groups are formed as soon as we have enough applicants working toward the same goals.
